SO! if you want a great day out just on you own or with the entire family then Spike Island would be a great place to visit. In those days, it was known as a convict depot, which was a temporary prison, detaining those who were sentenced to. The fort itself has so much potential and so much history. The Spike Island prison was founded at the height of the Great Famine in 1847. The fort needs a lot more work which is ongoing and is certainly not down to lack of effort but with all places like this funding is always an issue. The Staff were wonderful and couldn't be more helpful. The restaurant was big and roomy and the food was good with very good toilet facilities on site. The first chance I got to get away I went exploring and there is a lot to see, I only wish I had more time.
The place I found was huge and I didn't get a chance to see all of it which was a pity but I had a job to do educating and entertaining other visitors to the fort. The band will recreate the infamous Folsom Prison concert performed by The Man in Black himself over 50 years ago. A van is laid on to take people to the main fort if you don't feel like walking. The approach to the dock was so cool with a new dock just newly built. It was my first visit to the Island and my fellow re-enactors and I went over by ferry which was so relaxing with loads to see and take in. Cobh itself has an excellent connection to that great but deadly conflict. I was there as a battle re-enactor for an event honouring the two hundred and fifty thousand Irish men and women that fought in the American Civil War.
